Zema Ion as the X-Division Champion

Impact Wrestling star and former X-Division Champion Zema Ion recently took time out of his busy schedule to do an interview with BoredWrestlingFan’s ThinkSoJoE – on Joe’s birthday, no less!  We learn the incredible story of how Zema’s mother met his father, escaping a Singapore sweat shop in the process.  Zema tells us about his early days, training with the International Wrestling Cartel in Pennsylvania, changing the direction of that promotion in the process.  We’re told the story of how he missed his chance to train in Japan, and the discipline it took to train in Mexico.  Zema asks a fan question about the whereabouts of his afro, and talks about the bizarre comparisons to Carlito.  We learn where the original name of Shiima Xion came from, and who can take responsibility for changing it to Zema Ion upon his arrival in TNA.  We get Zema’s thoughts on the injury caused to Jesse Sorrenson, and an update on Sorrenson’s condition.  Finally, Zema tells us what band he’d love to play for if he had decided to be a rock star instead of a professional wrestler.

Cue the Opening

The subject of DLC is a touchy one. Sure, it’s a good thing to have extra content for your video game, especially if you have enjoyed the experience it has provided, and you wish to extend that for a few more hours. However, there is also a bad side to DLC, and unfortunately it’s the way most games are these days. It’s the fact that the DLC content is already on the disc. Which mean they could make it available as part of the game. But instead, they wait some time, and then charge you x amount to be able to play it, which is what the people at THQ have done with WWE ’13.

COMMERCIAL: The most awesome thing you will see.

During the roster reveal event for WWE ’13 before SummerSlam. They announced that AJ Lee, and Damien Sandow, would be DLC for WWE ’13. Although they showed no in-game footage at the time, it shows that they video game version of themselves was pretty much ready to go, and could indeed be included in the game if they chose to. However, they are not and are indeed included in the three DLC packages, but not where you’d think they’d be. For you see, AJ Lee is set to be released in the month of December, one month and a few days (depending where in the world you are Carmen Sandiego) after the release of the game. As for Sandow, well his character won’t be available until January 2013. So why announce them at the roster reveal, as DLC, if they are not going to be playable until at the earliest a month after game release. Why not just put them on the disc, as playable characters. Or, just don’t announce them all until the rest of the DLC is announced. Speaking of which..

Why have they announced DLC before the game has even hit shelves? This further shows that all DLC content, is actually on the disc, but game companies delay it, to attempt to squeeze every last cent out of you as possible, by adding DLC later on. The first set of DLC to be released, entitled the ‘Attitude Era’ Superstars Pack, and includes Rikishi, Scotty 2 Hotty and Grandmaster Sexay of the faction ‘Too Cool’, Gangrel from the Brood and Val Venis. These characters, as well as an accelerator boost, which allows you to edit attributes, is available as DLC, on release day. THQ did the same thing last year by having the likes of Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole as Day One DLC for WWE ’12, so this isn’t the first time it’s happened, but to charge people any amount, for content that should be on the disc but isn’t, and release it as DLC on Day One is beyond a joke. Why not just put the content on the disc? Why make people, who have already spent funds on buying your game in the first place, spend more money for content, which could quite easily be on the disc, thus saving the consumer money, and making it more likely to buy more from your company? It’s nothing but greed on the developer’s part, and it’s a disgrace that developers do that. But, as is said by some people.. Money makes the world go ’round.

COMMERCIAL: Well, if someone’s going to tell you, may as well be him..

With the announcement of the Downloadable Content, the website for WWE ’13, rubbed it in by showing screenshots of each character in the game. This means that all DLC content is on the disc, but spanning it out over two months, either shows that THQ are greedy and money-hungry, or, it shows that the game itself isn’t going to be a game which captures your attention for any period of time, and needs to inject the DLC as quickly as possible, in order to keep the gamer’s mind occupied with their game, in what is sure to be a busy time for gamers with the sheer amount of games coming out over the next few months. But the DLC deals may not be the worst thing about all this. The pre-order content is the biggest money making scheme of them all.

That being the ‘pre-order’ specials that are made. The first comes with a code to add ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson to your playable roster from the moment you unwrap the game, and place the disc into your console. The second deal, dubbed the ‘Austin 3;16′ edition of WWE ’13, comes with not only a code for Tyson, but codes for another attire for Steve Austin, the ATV entrance for Steve Austin, a collectible art card signed by the Rattlesnake himself, foil packaging with embedded Austin skull, and a DVD from Stone Cold Steve Austin: The Bottom Line on the Most Popular Superstar of All Time. These deals are to encourage you to pre-order the game, for an inflated price. However, if you wait 90 days after purchase, then Mike Tyson, the Steve Austin attire, and the Steve Austin ATV entrance,will be available to download without having to spend the extra quid on pre-ordering the game. Thus making these pre-order deals pretty much useless (Unless you are me, and can pre-order the game with just the Tyson code, for the same price as you would pre-ordering just the game without any bonuses).

COMMERCIAL: Sounds about right..

Personally, I think THQ have missed a massive opportunity to make maximum income out of it. What they should have done, is make two games. WWE ’13 and a separate game for the Attitude Era, much like what they did with ‘Legends of Wrestlemania’ a few years ago. That way, the WWE ’13 game, could have the current roster of characters, plus a few legends of the sport, and the Attitude Era game can have all the characters from the Attitude Era. Allowing the option to combine the two into a super game, gives you the same or more characters to choose from, but twice the money due to consumers having to buy two games, in order to get the full experience. That way, you get double the money from game sales, and double the money from creating DLC for each respective game. Hire me THQ, I’m available. I’m like JBL when it comes to money-making schemes.

There we are, a small rant about how DLC is pretty much a scam to get you to invest in their product. However, with that said, if you are involved in the game to the point where you would invest in the downloadable content to extend the experience, or you are a fan of the product that you would invest just to get the maximum out of the game, then it doesn’t matter does it? Because you’ll just buy the game, then the DLC, giving the developer lots of money, and allowing them to scam you with deals which you should already have from the moment you buy the disc. At least THQ aren’t like Capcom.. who will sell a game, release DLC, then release an ‘Ultimate’ version of the game, with the same characters as the first game and the DLC, but 16 more characters that are only on the ‘Ultimate’ version, thus making those who bought the first game complete numptys for wasting their money. Isn’t that right Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

EVE DEF. KAITLYN – Eve wins with a neck-breaker. Match is booked to make Eve look like she’s playing nice until she gets an opening for a cheap shot.
RYBACK DEF. JINDER MAHAL – Ryback scores the pin with the meat-hook.
KANE & DANIEL BRYAN “HUG OUT” – So, after a series of “anger management” sketches, Bryan and Kane agree to meet in the ring. General Manager AJ lets us decide their fate via “Twitter poll.” The WWE universe votes for them to “hug it out.” Meaning they have to hug each other.
They have to hug each other.

After stalling a good few minutes, Bryan eventually hugs Kane. Kane eventually hugs Bryan. They eventually hug each other. Then they start shoving each other. Then they start fighting. It ends with Bryan knocking Kane off the top rope with a chair.
U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: ANTONIO CESARO (U.S. CHAMPION) DEF. SANTINO MORELLA – Santino spends the entire match trying to make up his mind about using the cobra. Cesaro finishes this farce with his pile-driver variation.
ZACK RYDER DEF. HEATH SLATER – Ryder wins with the rough-rider.
ALBERTO DEL RIO DEF. JOHN CENA: FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE – A scary brawl that actually spilled out all the way to backstage. Cena throws Del Rio through the interview area and gives him the AA. Alberto lands on a luggage container and C.M. PUNK hits Cena with a kick to the head out of nowhere. Punk pulls Del Rio on Cena for a three-count, and then Cena takes a GTS face first onto Punk’s car. As the car drives off, PAUL HEYMAN looks out the window and winces.
THE GOOD
 • THE FINISH - The main event was actually exciting. Nice to see people who understand what “falls count anywhere” means. Punk getting Del Rio a win over Cena was the right way to get people hyped for the PPV. Paul Heymans cameo as Punks driver got me excited. I am marking out big-time for the possibility of him teaming up with Punk.
• ANGER MANAGEMENT – As stupid as these bits are, at least Kane and Bryan have made them watchable. Funny moment was when they both bailed on “Harold;” during a trust fall exercise, and the “doctor” losing his patients with his patients.
 THE BAD

Oh God, where to begin?
• COMMENTARY - Intercontinental champion The Miz joined the commentary team tonight. It was weird. Miz and Michael Cole seemed to be taking turns playing face. Oddly enough, Cole seemed to be working as the face announcer most of the night. It was kind of confusing. When Divas Champ Layla came out to join them for the Kaitlin/Eve match, Miz jumped all over her. They got into a Jerry Springer like shouting match with Cole desperately playing ref, with NO-ONE playing attention to the match.
• EVE VS KAITLIN – Actually decent; but BURIED by Miz and Layla bitching each other out. Also, Eve gets the win and makes a big show of offering Layla a handshake. You can see their feud coming a mile away, so what’s the point of making Kaitlin #1 contender if you want to do an Eve/Layla program? Why didn’t they just make Eve #1 contender?
• THE HUG – Screw you WWE universe. You’re buying into the WWE BS and voting for what they want you to vote for. You are getting the show you deserve.
THE UGLY
• AJ – Sweet mother, can we pull the plug on this experiment already? This whole night seemed to be more about AJ losing control than anything else. From people walking out on her to the breakdown in the ring, it’s like WWE wanted to make some point about any woman NOT named McMahon being in charge. Unless they’re setting up a Zach Ryder sized de-push, they need to have AJ quit this job and reactivate her as an active roster member so she can kill Vicki.
• VICKI AND “INVISIBLE” AJ – Just stop. Please just stop. Wrestling doesn’t do topical humor. Wrestling doesn’t need to do topical humor. For those playing along at home, Clint Eastwood was a guest speaker at the Republican National Convention last week, and did a “bit” with an empty chair representing Barack Obama. Vicki decided to pick up on this and do the same thing with AJ. It wasn’t funny. It wasn’t even relevant to the show, because AJ showed up.
• SANTINO’S “COBRA” – George Steel Is face palming this crap.

WHY ARE WE BOOKING THIS GODDMN SHOW?!?

Oh yeah, remember that Zach Ryder guy? No? Me neither, but it appears he is the GM for Smackdown. Turns out the computer is more popular in the WWE’s opinion. YAWN. Oh well, here’s the magical picture part of the review and the “hopping” reference:

‘Nuff said, let’s hop to it, shall we?

I watch, write, suffer, and succumb to this show, yet have to remind myself of what happened only minutes after each episode. That is how G’s Smackdown reviews work. This is not a play-by-play recap, there’s enough of those online. This is a highly-opinionated take of the show in question.

-Will I be watching this PPV on Sunday? Fuck no. I’m getting stupid with my boys/girls at our annual “Stampede Retardness” event (we can’t spell correctly, that’s how retarded we get). So I turn this question of a Go Home show over to another more experienced member of the IWC to answer. An adopted son of the home of the Calgary Stampede, Mr. Lance Storm. Let’s get serious for a moment. Mr. Storm what’s your take on the current state of the WWE?

Disclaimer: I will probably enjoy the Smackdown MitB match, and will of course not illegally stream it. That would be wrong, and theft. Don’t steal, kids! That’s my job.

- A little clip package of Zach Ryder starts the show, explaining how he got this GM spot and shilling his Youtube success and Twitter handle. Lillian Garcia introduces him, and he makes his way down to the ring. Ryder doesn’t get much in until Alberto Del Rio comes out and runs him down for calling himself the Internet Champion of the World…. Del Rio will become the real world champion. Ryder books him against…

Charles Barkley @G: “Wait, you’re telling me that the TNA show we used to review is now better than the WWE, but the channel got dropped by Viacom so most fans are stuck with this turrible product? Ha ha, sure G, and white boys can play basketball too.”

G @Charles Barkley: “Well first, I reviewed the Impact product, you usually just ended up in jail. Secondly, yes, that is precisely what I’m telling you.”

- * Alberto Del Rio vs. Sin Cara. To compensate for the lack of the trampoline, Sin Cara baseball slides into the ring, runs at the opposite middle ropes and does his somersault deal off of it. In a different era, when the black lighting effect shines above the ring, do you think Ricardo Rodriguez would have a bunch of white spots appear on his suit? I’m not insinuating anything, just thinking a la McMahon. Come on, this is the guy who originally wanted Kane in See No Evil to have a 3 foot penis in a masturbation scene. Just saying. Anyways, Del Rio’s initial domination is turned sour as the lucha picks up steam before our first commerical:

Farley on the brain, since Heath Farley appeared on Impact this week…

- And we’re back… Del Rio is back in control, and is methodically working the little man down with submissions and humiliation spots. After a kind of boring chunk of time, Sin Cara finally gets his steam but misses a high risk top rope 180 splash allowing Del Rio to submit him with an armbar.

- We get a bunch of fan videos from Tout. Great, this will fill one hour of RAW when it goes to three hours.

- Zach is congratulated by Teddy Long, but then Big Show tells him he sucks and Khali enters the shot and he is announced as the opponent. Then Khali does the “Woo Woo Woo, You Know It.” Guess one match I am FFW’ing through later? Can you?

- * Darren Young vs. Primo. I am literally reminded of these guys having a match 3 weeks ago, and then Primo punking out them back stage as Rosa Mendez shrieked some inane babble. AW rocks his introduction on his Britany Spears microphone of the PPs. His audio is kind of buried in the audience noise and entrance music. Epico and Primo are wearing what appear to be bibs. I guess they just came from Red Lobster? Mendez gets the hard camera side, but AW is on a live microphone hollering at his team to “get this money” and a funny spot when Darren Young gets a near fall on Primo where AW claims, “This beat down is brought to you by All World Productions and Darren Young! Come on Darren, get that money!” AW is much more enjoyable and is reminding me more of Jimmy Hart more than ever. Young dominates most of the match, and he and AW play off each other fantastically. - 1000th moment is Edge on April 11, 2011 retiring due to neck injuries. I think that was a good choice, because it was very significant. Dude retired as a champion, and call me Canadian because I teared up a little that Monday.

- Ryder is talking to Sheamus about having a show to run, and Jericho enter and calls this thing a train wreck. I disagree Jericho, last Monday was a fucking train wreck. Sheamus steps up, so Ryder makes a match.

Dave’s right, you know.

- * Christian and Santino Marella vs. Dolph Ziggler and Cody Rhodes. It’s pretty noticeable that Ziggler is letting his blonde hair dyejob fade out. Read into that as you will. This looks like it could have some legs (but wouldn’t mind seeing this turn into a sledge hockey match either, and in all honesty check it out some time. Looks like fun for me, able-bodied or not. Takes some serious upper body strength. I watched a ton of it during the 2010 Winter Olympics).

- Anyways, Santino and Ziggler start us off with Ziggler shaking his head at the US Champ. But one should not underestimate the somovagun. An early tag brings Christian into the bout, as the heeltastic isolation story is told. At one point, Rhodes puts Christian in a ten second delayed slam. Always love that spot. Santino gets the hot tag and hits his usual routine with the splits, the diving headbutt, and goes to set up the Cobra… BUT NO! Rhodes delays this, Christian takes him to the outside and a recovered Ziggler hits the Zig-Zag and pins Santino for the win!

- Charlie Sheen is still advertized as the Social Ambassador for the 1000th RAW. We’ll see about that, and we’ll be talking about it on BWF Radio Episode 31 this Sunday! Then we get the clip package of the Punk/Bryan/AJ stuff and some laptop GM bits. Not a fuck was given that night by me…. not one. Well, that’s a lie… there was one thing I really enjoyed, and here is both an animated gif and retort as to what it was here:

Chael Sonnen was dissected in the second round by Anderson Silva last Saturday. Some might say this spot that occurred on RAW was a slight nod to that. It wouldn’t shock me, considering Chael is tight with Punk and consults Steve Austin as how to react. The dirty dirt sheets report that the WWE has interest in Sonnen. I’d like to see that. The dude can cut a promo, even when he isn’t quoting Superstar Billy Graham.

- * Big Show vs. The Great Khali. I told you I would not watch this garbage unless on FFW. And even then it’s pretty terrible. Meh. Skip this, don’t waste your time. Big Show KO’s him in under a minute. Did I mention the Wonderpod Episode 118″>BWF are talking Mike Tyson’s Punch Out on Wonderpod #118 this week?

I beg to differ, sir. ‘Round these parts, Khali is mediocre.

- Ugghh.. G gets distracted by things for 45 minutes…. Dammit. TNA is better. How did that happen, again?

- Tagteam titles on Youtube before the PPV. Non-title? Not watching.

- * Ryback vs. Tyler Reks w/Kurt Hawkins. I think Cole called Ryback’s finish “The March of the Competition”? Reks gets on the microphone and tells us he’ll what done that his partner couldn’t do. Sure, buddy. Both of you are getting double slammed on the PPV unannounced. Reks almost gets an offensive punch strike combination in… only to fucked up. First time ever, an outside competitor smashing a cane into Ryback’s face. Hawkins of course. Not enough, as Ryback puts him away. But we did see some actually “competition” between the two. Ryback is slightly leveled down in this bout with less hitpoints, stamina, defence, strength, and mana. Dude still eats the guy, though.

The WWE needs an “out,” like Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation, every show that jumps the shark needs an “out” of crappy story lines…. right, The Great Gazoo?

- 1000th RAW moment – Host Hugh Jackman discusses his RAW celebrity host spot. True, dude was in the backstage and immediately went up to the Brooklyn Brawler for an autograph… Too-tall-Wolverine gets a pass (it was good, and he did change my tune about his casting as Wolvie).

G @The_Great_Gazoo_65: “Now all we need is, is an out of this A.J. storyline that pulled “The Fonz” a couple weeks back…”

- More Tout bullshit. Don’t care. FFW.

- * Damien Sandow vs. Justin Gabriel. Being highly touted, Gabriel “Ex-Werewolf” is already in the ring. Tout takes precedence… Sandow enters gloriously. I smell a squash… Sandow does a new charisma move on fallen Gabriel with an arm swirl elbow drop. Sandow hits his finisher in about 2 minutes,

- Hornswoggle GM reveal clips from RAW… FFW… angry again.

As easy as it is to rip on Vince Russo, the CURRENT team of writers (see: VKM) thought Hornswoggle was the ideal choice for the anonymous RAW GM.

- Did I Know? “In 1993, Kofi Kingston, The Miz, and CM Punk were still in middle school.” It’s not even fun making fun of the “facts” anymore.

- * Sheamus vs. Chris Jericho – Sheamus enters first. Jericho “jackets” it up…. main event, next. Fucking ads…

This one is better. DUKE!

- This is a match that is about trading spots. Both men do damage and set up minor signiture moves for the first segment… decent so far. Jericho manhandles Sheamus during the break, we’re told. But of course, as we return, the pale one gets his attack on, hair did, etc. Exhaustion sets in, and the men get more careless, as Jericho lands a mid rope launched drop kick and a hard-camera Lionsault. Sheamus gets some steam back, looks for a Celtic Cross, NO! Walls of Jericho! Rope break… White Noise attempt into another Walls of Jericho! Middle of the ring face crawl… drag back… Hulk up to the rope! Sheamus breaks the hold and hits the White Noise! NO PIN. More finisher missed spots… ok this match is watchable, no doubt…. Sheamus pulls himself from the seated position on the canvas to the top rope only to eat a Code Breaker! DUDE! Sheamus pulls himself up after much abuse as an angry Jericho yell at him…. Y2J charges, right into a sick looking Brogue Kick, and wins the match. God Bless you Chris Jericho, you helped Sheamus look important and gave us a great match as a result!

- We’re not done. Post match Del Rio comes out and assaults the worn Sheamus, and dangles him off the entrance ramp side in an armbar.

I criticize because I care. I did enjoy the show. I wouldn’t watch if I didn’t love this shit.

The WWE logo comes up, and I’m out.

I almost didn’t do a podcast this week, but Mike Adamle being the new General Manager of Monday Night RAW was just too much to resist talking about.  It’s a short one, clocking in at just over 33 minutes, so enjoy!

P.S.:  I wanted to point out that I’ve taken some measures to make the site easier to read, but didn’t think it was worthy of putting into it’s own post, so I’m adding it on here.  The current changes were suggested by Chris Coyier at CSS-Tricks.com.

Well, I decided to do a podcast this week after all.  I’ve also decided that I’m not going to the Vans’ Warped Tour either, mostly because I can’t afford to.  So that means your iMPACT review will be up tomorrow.  This week’s podcast clocks in at just over 40 minutes, it’s some quick thoughts on the past week worth of shows, and a long winded rant about why ECW now officially needs to change it’s name.

Now would be a good time, I suppose, to announce that I’m going to be doing more blog style posts in addition to the review posts – after the power comes back on at my place of employment.  Yes folks, it’s been seven weeks as of today and my job is still to just sit in the dark and tell people to go away.  Hopefully that will get fixed soon and I’ll be able to go back to a normal posting schedule around here.

Alright, we’ve had a crazy podcasting week – and as of this moment, the only podcast available on the site is the newest one – an audio podcast taken from what was going to be a video podcast.  Then the cats managed to cut off power to my modem about halfway through the video upload, so I nixed that idea in favor of the audio.  Then our podcasting software wasn’t working, thanks to an upgrade of our main software.  For now we’ve got a replacement, but the previous Podcasts won’t work, and after all the crap I just went through trying to get this one up, I don’t really feel like going back and fixing them, especially when I’m probably going back to the old software once an update for that comes out.  Anyways, enjoy!
