On December 23rd, 2013, I had the humble opportunity to attend a Pop-Up Taqueria event described as an evening of “TACOS, BEER, BOURBON, HIP HOP, & LIVE LUCHADOR WRESTLING”. It was a collaborative effort between Original Stampede Wrestling and Taco or No Taco. DJ Tokyo was booked to kick out some old school funk and hip hop. When Doc Knight of OSW offered to get me into this completely sold out event, I booked off my night job because Christmas had just come early.

For weeks, pictures of the elusive Caballo De Misterioso had been circulating the internet from various locations of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Who is this masked warrior? Would he stand tall at the end of the night in an event that promoted a four match card of Luchadors versus American Wrestlers? Meet Caballo De Misterioso.

I arrived at the Calgary Legion 1 building a few hours before the event, and let myself in. The building itself is beautiful and adorned with relics of the past, and a sense of tradition and battle. Appropriate for a wrestling event, I would argue.

After meeting Doc in person for the first time, I was privy to watching how the show was put on, from the ring being set up, watching guys discuss and plan their matches, and veterans giving younger wrestlers advice. This was a part of the experience that one generally does not have as a fan of grapplers of the squared circle, and I cannot thank Doc enough for the opportunity.

I took some photos of the beautiful banners that hung on the main stage facing the ring, as I awaited my fellow team of media to arrive. Professor Salmon and Zwan of BWF Radio fame (as well as the Prof’s flame), joined me at ringside at we dubbed, “The Spanish Announce Table”.

Suddenly it was eight PM, and the doors opened. DJ Tokyo spun as the venue filled up quickly, and the Taco or No Taco line swelled. We were positioned at a media table and armed with cameras and smart phones. We were told to be prepared to back up immediately due to our proximity to the ring, as not to unintentionally become part of the high flying action.

The venue was packed, the lines for tacos and refreshments were long and popular. The atmosphere became very colorful as many fans came dressed in lucha masks or wrestler get ups. As the clock neared nine, the crowd was ready for the show.

Doc began the event, introducing our guest ring announcer, Dynamite Dan. Dan mirrored the sentiment of Doc, welcoming the crowd to the special event lauding the lucha libre style. And it was time for our first match of the evening.

Squiggy Gonzalez Rapido vs Redneck Cooter Skoal. Cooter heelishly entered first, running down the crowd on the microphone and instantly establishing his redneck tendencies (mp3). This is turn led to a positive reception for Gonzalez. The match itself was quick paced, as Cooter attempted in vain to defeat the larger Rapido, who had a belly as jolly as St. Nick. After a show of strength, Cooter would take control. However, he would miss a top rope attack only to turn the tides as Rapido would defeat the dastardly redneck with a top rope slam. The match was 3:40 in duration.

Scotley Crue vs Jose Suervo. Scotley entered first, tossing Milk Bones at the crowd, and even spitting some from his mouth at them. He then cut a scathing promo. Suervo enters by flipping off the top rope with a taco in hand!

This was awesome! Scotley has none of it, as he attacks, landing a suplex spilling said taco. The two go back and forth briefly, which culminates to Jose hitting a crossbody onto Crue on the outside of the ring. Suervo capitalizes on this attack by returning to the ring, and winning via count out on Scotley Crue in 3:15 minutes.

Scotley is enraged by his loss (mp3), and gets on the microphone and engages in a battle of words with Doc Knight. He demands another match, so a challenge is issued that if Crue can find a tag team partner, he can face Los Blanco Fuego Dragons. Scotley is joined by The Slammer.

Scotley Crue and The Slammer (Crue Sexual Nightmares) vs Los Blanco Fuego Dragons. This was a fantastic bout, and it ran for about 11:30 minutes. The story told was one of solidarity between teams. The Dragons are a unit, whereas Scotley and The Slammer seem to have their own agendas. After much fantastic feats of strength by The Slammer, and acrobatic athleticism by Crue and The Dragons, The Slammer dangled a Dragon with feet upon the top turnbuckle, he slammed him into the mat. Crue immediately tagged himself in, and stole the pin fall victory from his partner. Then like the smarmy heel he is, Crue selfishly implied he was the reason the team won. (mp3) Great match!

CAM!!ikaze vs Andrew Hawk (with the OSW Title on the line). The two both cut promos, and do a fine job. Hawk wants a title shot, but is cowardly trying to dodge tonight’s match, claiming he is ill. The angers Doc Knight, who asks the people to wait for a couple minutes to see if he and Dynamite Dan can come up with a solution. This match is considered null and void. (mp3)

But the solution to this ordeal, I assure you, made me smile. People who know my wrestling tastes would tell you my two favorite things about professional wrestling are high flying and battle royals. Doc announces that we are to have a Battle Royal! Last Man Standing takes the title! (mp3)

The Battle Royal begins with CAM!!ikaze in the ring as Scotley and Cooter run out immediately. Scotley is immediately tossed out, only to be followed shortly after by Cooter!

The action settles down for a little while as the remaining wrestlers splinter off into separate sections of the ring. Slowly but surely, more luchas are sent flying over the ring and are eliminated upon reaching the floor. But not without a valiant effort and numerous teases. Our final four come down to The Slammer, Jose Suervo, Andrew Hawk and CAM!!ikaze. The former two are the next two eliminated leaving us with our originally billed match up of Hawk and ‘Kaze! The two battle for minutes, teasing near eliminations and demonstrating to the now feverish crowd why Original Stampede Wrestling is back! Ultimately, after about 9:02 minutes, Hawk eliminates CAM!!ikaze!

Hawk parades around under the belief that he has won the title, only to be corrected by Doc Knight who refuses to give him the belt. Hawk had his opportunity tonight already to a one on one match, and had backed out. Knight informs Hawk that if he agrees to participate in said match tonight, he will win the title (and get his pay cheque). Hawk reluctantly agrees. (mp3)

CAM!!Kaze vs Andrew Hawk (with the OSW Title on the line). For real this time! This lasts a mere thirty seconds at best, and CAM!!Kaze rolls up Hawk to capture the title! This leaves the crowd happy, full of tacos, cold beer, and a good guy champion. (mp3)

Afterwards, the lucha libre wrestlers come out to celebrate with ‘Kaze to bring the show to a close. Doc thanks the crowd along with Dynamite Dan… and then announces a very special guest. It’s Teddy Hart (with Mr. Money)! Teddy thanks the people of Calgary for their patience and respect of the legacy of the Hart family’s contributions to the city. He notes big things are on their way for 2014 and Original Stampede Wrestling.

All in all, I had a blast. This was one of the hottest tickets in town, and I had the privilege to come down with my team to help cover this event (all of which are true independent wrestling fans). This is something that always needs to be supported, and for this child of the eighties, I am fully endorsing the promotion. STAMPEDE WRESTLING IS BACK!

Well after a long wait due to various trips, excursions and umm…jaunts, episode 2 of my Audio Wrestling Sitcom Podcast Radio Play Thingy (that’s the technical term) Broken Pencils is here for your enjoyment.

It’s a wonderful process making these podcasts. The fact that I can write it, record it and edit it all within 2 days makes the process far more enjoyable.

The following appears courtesy of http://www.whyalltheanger.co.uk/

[youtube AW6eKizBLJQ]

If I had to spend weeks listening to my own voice while editing I think I’d go slowly insane and end up talking in character for the rest of my days. Come to think of it I’m half way there already.

So if you like it, like it (on YouTube), spread the word and, on a separate note, you might want to subscribe to my RSS feed at the top there. It’ll save you the hassle of having to open your favourites bar and click on my page once a day, those are clicks which you could be using to donate to charity or look at cute videos of kittens and such.

This summer, Bored Wrestling Fan had the opportunity to discuss the return of a Calgary, and international, professional wrestling staple, Stampede Wrestling. On a stormy August afternoon, Doc Knight and Bruce Hart spent time with ThinkSoJoE and G explaining the vision and mission of the newly dubbed, “Original Stampede Wrestling” (OSW). This is the real deal, folks. Accept no imitations.

The OSW has started up a fundraising project via Indiegogo.com, called “Return of the Ring.” Over the course of the next 116 days, the goal is to raise $150,000 in order to setup of facility for training and business operations and to build two new rings for training and shows.

But possibly even more amazing, is the goal to repair and refurbish THE RING. Not just any ring, this is the same ring that has been a part of Stampede Wrestling since the beginning. It has seen and spent time with countless wrestling talents from the days of the past to some of the stars of today. The “Ring of Dreams” is associated among those who trained with the legendary Stu Hart and his family in the world famous “Dungeon,” and possibly may continue to do so with your support.

You touch it and feel its power, as the thunder, the electricity, the pounding of its heart and soul… SCREAMING as it rushes in to you… “I will NOT let it end here, I will NOT die out here, I have stood the test of time, so Test me with yours! I will show you what I stand for”

The following video comes directly from the Indiegogo fundraising webpage.

For even more information on the OSW Return of the Ring, including corporate sponsorship packages that include advertising incentives through out televised and new media content, as well as wrestling training packages, event tickets and more for individual sponsorships, check out the official fundraising page here.

The Fundraiser runs now through Wednesday, March 06 at 11:59PM PT.

I don’t know if six years ago constitutes a “classic,” per say. However, with the Superbowl being a week prior, it occurred to me that there has been an off-and-on again revival of Stampede Wrestling.

Today’s match took place on September 15, 2006 during the half time CFL matchup between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Calgary Stampeders (the Rock’s former club). It is outside, under a veiled night sky… and because it’s Canada, it’s snowing/sleeting at negative three degrees Celsius.

Our bout for the North American Heavyweight Championship: Apocalypse {C} versus TJ Wilson (Tyson Kidd of WWE). While the footage is a little blurry (in part due to the weather), it’s an interesting watch. The two grapplers deal with the adverse ring conditions, trying not to slip on the icy canvas… and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an outdoor match anything like this. Enjoy!

This ladder match would precede the famous Wrestle Mania X ladder match between Razor Ramon and Sean Micheals. This took place in the CMRW promotion, in Calgary. According to Lance Storm himself, was seen on television by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who was floundering with the Calgary Stampeders CFL club.

Its time again for more retro wrestling favorites from Calgary, Alberta, Canada! A few weeks ago I featured a 6 man tag team match featuring the British Bulldogs & Don Moraco. This time, we will take a look at a great match that took place only a few weeks prior to that event. The Stampede International Tag Team champions, the Cuban Commandos, had been fighting off the title hungry British Bulldogs for about a month, doing what ever it took to remain champions. This involved cheating, getting counted out , using foreign objects and being disqualified on numerous occasions. These matches drove the crowd absolutely nuts every time as Stampede fans anticipated their returning heros, and former world Tag Team Champions in the WWF, to win the titles with ease. They did not. These matches were all leading up to, of course, a match where the Commandos were confined to an event with no rules , no where to run and no way to win by cheating. A match inside a solid steel cage! Enjoy the match and I will return with more classic wrestling from the Stampede promotion. Check out more PatMan picks over at www.wonderpodonline.com and also check out our year end videogame podcast ! But, “In the mean time, and in-between time, that’s it. Another edition of Stampede Wrestling”!

Welcome back to another trip in the Stampede time machine, were we will yet again look back at some classic old school wrestling from some of the legends of the past. This time around , young Bret Hart who is very early in his career gets involved in yet another great inter promotional wrestling match that Stampede was famous for having from time to time. This time its not against any World Champion from one of the big American federations such as the AWA, but a match against an opponent from Japan named Animal Hamaguchi. Animal also went by the name Higo Hamaguchi and was a wrestler in many of the great Japanese wrestling promotions of the time such as Japan Pro, All-Japan and New Japan Wrestling. While most people know that Stampede Wrestling was broadcasting across Canada and also into the northern United States, the show was also syndicated in many other countries across the globe, including Japan. Heck, some middle eastern nations at this time did not have any WWF or NWA wrestling at all on their T.V., yet they were watching Stampede for years. This could help explain Bret’s ultra popularity over there. Worth noting this week is that this is actually a Japanese syndicated version of Stampede Wrestling, so its a pretty unique video to watch. Also worth noting are all the photographers at ringside. Check out www.wonderpodonline.com for more PatMan picks and for episode 90 of our Video Game Podcast! See you all next time!

Welcome to another episode of Stampede Wrestlings classic moments. This time around I bring you the Magnificent Don Muraco, who had only recently left the WWF and ventured to Calgary. The” Magnificent One” would find great success in the Stampede promotion. He won the Heavyweight Championship by defeating Mike Shaw( Bastian Booger, Norman The Lunatic) in late 1988. He would defend that title against all comers in the territory, only to drop the title against Davey Boy Smith about 5 months later in a series of great matches! Don Muraco’s Tag partners for this match were the legendary British Bulldogs, who had recently returned to their wrestling roots back to Calgary from a tour of Japan, after leaving the WWF. Their opponents for this match were The Cuban Commandos, the constantly cheating team that the Bulldogs had recently defeated for the Stampede tag team belts. Joining that veteran heel tag team was Makhan Singh, who Don Muraco was fighting with for the heavyweight title. Worth noting in this video is the use of the ” yellow cards” which the Stampede referees sometimes used to ” warn” wrestles before they were disqualified with a “red card”. Enjoy the match, its a ” ring – a ding-dong- dandy”! I shall return with more classic wrestling action from Calgary next time!

Welcome back to another classic encounter in Calgary’s rich past. This time around we will take a look at a young “cocky” wrestler by the name of B.G. Holliday as he takes on a young Chris Benoit. Holliday never became an international super star like Benoit did, he would never become multi time world champion in the major federations. However, he was a talented grappler and had one important thing that many of the famous wrestler’s lacked in this promotion. He had absolutely great mic skills, he had the gift of gab. While legends such as Bret Hart, Chris Benoit & The Dynamite Kid may have been some of the greatest technical wrestlers of all time, most Stampede stars were not great on the microphone, especially early in their careers. And this is where Holliday really shined. His mic skills, even at this early stage of his young wrestling career, were some of the best in the territory and he reminded me very much of Chris Jericho in both his wrestling and his mic skills. A cocky Jonathan Holliday quickly became “the man that fans loved to hate” in the territory. Interestingly, Holliday was involved in some of the “darker moments” of Stampedes history. This was a time when the promotions business side became less well run by its promoters and as a result wrestlers were leaving for bigger organizations with bigger wallets. There is a story that the Dynamite Kid, after returning from the WWF injured, broken and addicted to drugs, became jealous of Holliday’s quick success in Calgary, wanted to run him out of town and bad mouth him in the industry. If this famous story was an exaggeration of real events I can not tell you, however there are great stories of a back ally fight in Calgary on electric avenue between the former British Bulldog and Holiday over drugs, jealousy, and pay days that needed to be settled. Other events are rumored to have taken place between the two, but as they are both unconfirmed and very illegal, I shall not get into them. Just realise that both men left Canada soon after, and it was not because they didn’t like the cold weather! Enjoy the match and I will return with another “ring- a ding-dong -dandy” next week!

What is going on Wrestling fans? This time around Im going with a match that is both unique and special in the history of pro wrestling for 2 reasons. For starters its a WWF title match taking place in Calgary, but its in an official Stampede Wrestling ring featuring one of Stampedes most popular wrestlers of all time. Thats pretty unique. Also, its the celebration of Stu Harts 80 Birthday, and as a consequence, wrestlers from around the world came to the event to both preform and also wish the legend a Happy 80th. This time around we will be enjoying Razor( Scott Hall) VS Owen Hart, for the intercontinental WWF championship. And this joint Stampede/WWF match is called of course by the legendary Ed Whalen, the voice of Stampede Wrestling for many decades. Worth noting at the beginning of the video Owen has a quick segment talking about his father, which is a very nice touch. Owen was playing the role of a heel at the time in the WWF. However, when in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, its pretty hard to have the crowd hate any former Stampede Wrestler as Vince McMahon would soon learn and capatialze on in the future with his Hart Foundation story-line. Also worth noting while watching the video is the top ring rope coming off and being quickly turned into a weapon. You will then notice a quick exit from the ring to draw the attention away from the rope being put back on. Finally worth noting is the “run in” by one of my least favorite wrestlers of all time. Here is a hint as to who he is ” I made a porn Movie with a Man/Woman and lived to tell about it”. Also, if these videos are getting your old school classic wrestling interests up, feel free to download our Stampede podcast .G and myself discuss all things Stampede wrestling including our run ins with the likes of Davey Boy Smith, Bad News Brown, Chris Benoit and Bret Hart when we were just kids! http://wonderpodonline.com/?p=2533 See you all next time !

Welcome back to another trip down Stampede Wrestling’ memory lane. This week I have a match specially picked out for Halloween viewing! First up its a young “Flying Brian Pillman”, who at this point in his career had only recently started training in the famous “dungeon” of the Hart family. Pillman would, of course, go on to the ECW and he would also later become tag champions with Steve Austin. Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was his WWF run as part of the Hart Foundation. Brian Pillman gained international success everywhere he went. Unfortunately, like so many other Stampede trained wrestlers, he was taken from this earth well before his time. His opponent was Jason The Terrible, a “supernatural” wrestling heel who’s character was based on the frightening Friday the 13th movie monster of the same name. Although intended to be an unstoppable heel, Jason would ironically become a very popular face in the Stampede promotion. No matter how hard promoters wanted this character to be an “evil heel” that the fans would fear and boo when he was in the ring, Jason quickly became a fan favorite. In fact, the crowd soon started to love his horror character and bring in hockey masks of their own to show Jason! Fans started to cheer for the monster more than they did the faces that he wrestled against. In other words, Jason The Terrible would become one of the first true “anti-heros” in the business and as Bruce Hart put it “was well on his way to wrestling stardom”. Jason even became tag partners with one of the terratories biggest faces of all time, Owen Hart. Unfortunately, the original Jason The Terrible was involved in a car accident which injured the man behind the mask and put an end to his career. After the original Jason was forced to stop competing in Stampede, there have been other men who wrestled behind the Jason Mask in other territories, but it is THIS Jason that I will always be fond of. Have a fun Halloween wrestling fans, and dont forget to check out www.wonderpodonline.com for more Patman picks and also wonderpod video game podcast episode 86 !

Welcome back to another Stampede Wrestling classic encounter as we once again travel back in the pro wrestling time machine and return to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This time around I have discovered what could very well be the first ever televised ladder match. The ladder match is of course a very popular event made very famous in the WWF. However unlike what some younger pro wrestling fans may think,Vincent Kennedy McMahon did not invent the ladder match. This type of match had been done long before it ever made its way to that big time federation. It was actually Stampede legend Bret Hart himself who suggested the ladder match type should be used in the WWF. So,when was the first ladder match, you ask? The first ever ladder match is up for some minor debate, but most “wrestling historians” strongly suggest that Dan Kroffat, way back in 1972 , invented the first ladder match in Stampede Wrestling. Kendo Nagasaki has also been mentioned, by some, as perhaps inventing the match around that same time but less confedently. In either case, no televised account of either match seems to exist but I do remain hopeful that there is some evidence of the first ladder match somewhere. I do, however, have one of the first ever internationally televised ladder matches. It involves Bert Hart and his opponent Bad News Allen ( Brown), two men who had been feuding for some time in the Stampede territory. Of course in the years to come they would continue this feud in the WWF. Enjoy this classic ladder match, possibly the first on TV, and I will return next time with more Stampede Wrestling classics! If you want more “PatMan picks” or you like video game podcasts, chech out www.wonderpodonline.com !

Its time once again to travel back into Calgary’s rich wrestling past for some classic Stampede action. This time around I have a match showcasing the members of my favorite tag team of all time, the famous British Bulldogs. Or should I say future favorite tag team of all time. The catch is, this match takes place well before they ever teamed together, left for the WWF to became world champions, dominated in Japan and then returned back to Calgary once again. As a matter of fact , as you will soon see, Davey boy Smith is VERY young and practically unrecognizable when compared to his much more muscular, future Bulldog self. It is very evident that both of these yet to be world famous British Bulldogs are clearly not spending the same time working out in the gym and are not “into the juice” at this point in their careers. This is a great match for the Stampede mid-heavyweight title , held by the” heel ” Dynamite Kid as he defends against a very popular new ” face”, young Smith. As usual the crowd is very into the match, and also as usual in Stampede Wrestling the referee acts both idiotic and blind, driving the crowd nuts with his final decision. Worth noting this time around is the post match interviews with both future Bulldogs. This is where you will really see how young these future legends both were at this time and also how much time they must have spent in the gym soon after! Enjoy this classic encounter that took place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I will see you for another ” Ring -A- Ding- Dong- Dandy” next time. Dont forget to check out www.wonderpodonline.com for more “PatMan picks” , also episode 84 of our video game podcast and much more!

Welcome yet again to another trip down Stampede Wrestlings historic and classic past. As Ed Whalen would perfectly put it, last week I had a “Malfunction at the junction”, but I am back this week for a ” Ring-A-Ding-Dong-Dandy!”. This time around lets have a look at tag team wrestling in the form of two very good teams. First up is “The Kiwis”, a tag team who became very famous later in the WWF under a new name “The Bushwhackers”. The Kiwis opponents on this particular night were two brothers who belong to one of the most famous families in the sports history, the Harts. This time around a young Bret teams up with his big brother Keith. Perhaps it was because he was older, or because he wanted to help his famous father run the family wrestling business, or maybe Vince just didn’t see the same potential in him, Keith Hart would not become a famous WWF champion as his little brothers Owen and Bret both did. That said, however, he was still a major force to be reckoned within the Stampede promotion and in my opinion could have made it just as big as his little brothers became worldwide. Although the Kiwis would become international wrestling stars in the future it was in Stampede that they really started to shine as a tag team. The extra time training in the famous dungeon along with the experience on the road across Canada gave the Kiwis their first ever tag team titles, right here in the Stampede promotion. Worth noting in this match, in classic Stampede Wrestling style, the referee turns a blind eye to most of the Kiwis heel tactics while preventing the hometown boys from making clean tags. Man, did those Stampede Wrestling Refs ever drive the fans crazy back in those days! Enjoy the tag team action and I will return again with more Stampede Wrestling classics next time!

Welcome to another episode of classic wrestling, Stampede Style! This time around I am featuring something a little different than my usual old school wrestling matches. Don’t worry, all the dungeon trained future super stars and Stampede alumni will return to wrestle it out for our enjoyment next time. Today, I am featuring a “strong man” competition, or powerlifting showcase if you prefer from 2 of Stampede Wrestlings most powerful men. Hell 2 of the WORLDS most power full men at the time. Legitimate “Worlds Strongest Man” winner Bill Kazmaier “mans up” against former power lifting champion Ted Arcidi. With new and younger powerlifters and strong men entering the scene, the decision for both men to become pro wrestlers was a complete no brainer and coincidentally both men found them selves in the Calgary promotion at the same time. Of course this was a great chance for Stu Hart to promote big matches between these massive muscle men in the future. Sure, these guys could not actually wrestle very well. However unlike the smaller guys in Stampede, they didn’t have to know all the wrestling holds and moves to be noticed, they just had to be in the ring beating the crap out of people. Because of their fame as strong men and their intimidating size, they automatically gained all the attention they needed to get a good days pay. lets watch the “Competition” unfold and of course because this is taking place in a Stampeded Wrestling ring, you can rest assured that things wont exactly go smoothly! Worth noting is the actions by Ted Arcidi later in the competition that, of course, sets up a big feud between 2 of Stampede Wrestlings strongest men to ever step into the ring.

Welcome again to another fun trip back in pro wrestling history. Today we will visit a match involving one of Stampedes biggest stars at this point time, Dr. D David Shultz. Although a star in places like AWA, WWF, Japan and Stampede Wrestling , Dr. D is probably most famous for his big mouth both inside and outside the wrestling ring. It was his “open had slap” assault on a network reporter who mentioned that “Wrestling was fake” that is what most people remember Dr. D for. Ironically, it was that very event that put a halt on his career in the big wrestling organizations as his actions were rumored to result in a costly law suit that followed. Dr. D’s opponent in this classic match is the AWA World champion Nick Bockwinkle who, like other AWA world champions, would venture to the Calgary promotion several times per year to take on who ever was at the top of the card at the time. I am not sure where this match took place as it is not in the usual Stampede pavilion venue that the majority of Stampede Wrestling events were televised , but appears to be a smaller venue. Stampedes territory stretched across western Canada and even into north western US, so it could have been anywhere really. The crowd was pretty hot for the match and that’s all that matters for the Wrestlers putting on a show and Ed Whalen was there for the TV taping. Worth noting this time around is the fans chanting Nick “Bullwinkle”. Enjoy the match and decide for your self if it was a 2.5 count or a 3 count at the end ! And if you like videogame podcasts, feel free to check out wonderpod episode 79 on i Tunes and also at our website www.wonderpodonline.com where you will find all sorts of fun stuff!
Its that time again people, its time for some classic wrestling action. Welcome to another journey back in time as we explore Stampede Wrestlings great historic past. This time around lets watch a very good match between 2 former wrestlers from the Calgary promotion who were actually WWF employees at the time battling it out for the world tag team titles on the biggest stage of them all. However, in between their feud in the WWF, both men took time to return to their roots and lace up the boots in a Stampede Wrestling ring once again. Those 2 men were one half of the Hart foundation, Bret Hart, and his brother in law Davey Boy Smith who was of course one half of the British Bulldogs. Bret played the “Heel” in this classic encounter as Davey boy played the “Face” but lets face it, the crowd in Calgary loved both of these alumni. Worth noting is the appearance of the Dynamite Kid near the end of the video and of course and as always the classic commentary of Ed Whalen. Enjoy this great match and I will see you on the next episode of PatMan picks next time!

Welcome to another episode of classic wrestling here at Wonderpodonline.com. As usual, we will travel back in time once again to our destination of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The home of Stampede Wrestling! This time its Owen Hart, the future WWF tag team champion, “slammy” award winner and the man destined to become the “king of Harts” in the WWF. His opponent in this match is a famous Stampede Wrestling veteran by the name of Bad news Allen. You will likely know Bad news Allen as Bad news Brown from his time wrestling in the WWF in some great matches, including Wrestlemainia moments against Owens very own brother, Bret Hart. This match showcases young Owens early talents in the ring as he spends much of the match dominating Allen in the technical aspects of pro wrestling. However, this match will also show off the toughness, experience and never die attitude of Bad News Allen that made him a star and a multi time champion both in Calgary and around the world. Worth noting near the end of the video is the appearance of Owens greatest rival in Stampede Wrestling ,Makhan Singh, who was also known as Bastian Booger in the WWF ( I still feel so, so ,sorry for him about that terrible gimmick).
One of the great things about Stampede Wrestling was its inter promotional matches. Many classic encounters took place in Calgary between the Stampede roster and champions from other wrestling territories such as the AWA, NWA, Japan and even other Canadian organizations. Here is a classic encounter out of Stampede Wrestlings rich past thats bound to interest wrestling historians. A young Bret Hart challenges the 4 year world title reign of the legendary AWA heavyweight champion, Nick Bockwinkle. Bret was legitimately injured at this time and, of course, in the early “learning phase” of his career. However that did not stop Bret , the future “best there ever will be” and Nick, who was at the time “the best there was” from putting on a good wrestling match for all the fans. Worth noting is the mention of Davey Boy Smith winning the Stampede light heavyweight title, earlier in that same night. Worth also noting are the post match interviews by Ed Whalen with Nick Bockwinkle and “Dr. D” Shultz ,who of course, competed in Stampede for several years. Dr. D also competed in the AWA, NWA, WWF and is most famous for his assault on a reporter who told him wrestling was fake! Enjoy the classic match, check out www.wonderpodonline.com for more PatMan picks and videogame podcasts, and I will see you all back here for another “ring-a-ding-dong-dandy”, next week!

Once again G has invaded your regularly scheduled PatMan Picks Saturday throw back to the Stampede Wrestling article. Yep, and once again I am here to screw it up by referencing a promotion that is not the one from Calgary. This week, we go way back to 1994 and the fallout from WrestleMania X.

This event was notable in that Owen had beaten Bret at Mania, and this was a culmination of the feud between the brothers. The feud became even more intense as Bret’s former partner in the Hart Foundation, Jim Neidhart, would interfere at the King of the Ring to cause an DQ finish allowing Bret to retain his title against Diesel. Afterwards, Neidhart would leave Bret to be beaten by HBK and Diesel… and Owen would win the King of the Ring tournament and begin his tenure as “The King of Harts.”

Fast forward to Summerslam, where the two Hart brothers were booked to settle their ongoing feud in a blue steel cage with Jim Neidhart in the crowd to support Owen, and Davey Boy Smith in support Bret (both brothers-in-law of the Harts). Talk about a family feud, huh?

Clearly much of this program is tied to Stampede Wrestling, and the past experiences of all grapplers listed in the previous paragraph. And since Summerslam goes down tomorrow, and this is a great classic bout from a historical SS match, it seems appropriate that this is <del datetime="2011-08-07T03:32:40+00:00">PatMan’s</del> G’s Stampede Classic pick for this week.

This one’s just over 40 minutes folks, so get comfy and ready to watch an epic classic.

I loved watching tag team wrestling as a kid as there were some amazing and entertaining tag teams in many territories. Teams like the Road Warriors, Can Am connection, Killer Bees, Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik and the Hart Foundation top my list of top tag teams from the past. However one tag team sits above them all, even the mighty Road Warriors, as my personal all time favorite team. That team is the British Bulldogs. By the time the British Bulldogs reached the WWF they had already competed along side and often against each other many times in classic Stamped Wrestlings encounters. While their popularity (and bodies) grew bigger and bigger in the WWF, I already had a strong admiration for them and knew just how talented they were. After an exciting title run in the WWF only to lose the titles ironically to yet another Stampede Wrestling alumni tag team by the name of the The Hart Foundation, Davey Boy and Dynamite soon went to Japan for a successful tour of the orient and finally returned, full circle, back to Stampede Wrestling. By this time the combination of steroid abuse and brutal back injuries were really taking a lot out of the Dynamite Kid both inside and outside the ring. The British Bulldogs days as a team were numbered. Davey Boy would soon embark on a successful singles career returning to the WWF, WCW and even back in Stampede upon occasion. Lets look at one of the last matches for this legendary tag team as they compete for the Stampede Tag Team belts held by the evil and chronically cheating Cuban Commandos! Its a ring-a-ding-dong-dandy! See you next week,. But,in the mean time and in between time, check out Wonderpod videogame podcast on itunes and also some of the other stuff I do over at www.wonderpodonline.com !

After making the clean tag with G, Im back with another edition of Stampede Wrestling classics. This time around I am bringing in someone one BIG. How big you say? How about the legendary Andre the Giant? In order to showcase his amazing size and skills, the big hearted giant made several appearances in the Stampede promotion over the years often appearing in gimmick matches like handicap matches and “tug of wars” . If you don’t think that Andre had skills, think again. He was man who once lifted a massive Arnold Schwarzenegger off his feet so he couldn’t pay the bill at a restaurant, while only using one arm . Andre had incredible strength. Thus, not accidently killing his opponents in the ring while preforming required great skill on his behalf. Skills that I assure you the other wrestlers were praying for. This week, I bring you a match taylor made for Andre, the battle royal. While its almost impossible to NOT center your attention completely on the giant in this encounter from Stampedes past you will find other wrestlers in the mix that are worth noting as well. At least 2 of the Hart brothers are partaking in the chaos, Bruce and Keith can be seen slugging away at their opponents. Also, a young Stampede Wrestler who would later become the Junk Yard Dog in WWF considers his chances against Andre as well. Im off to wonderpodonline.com to check out our video game podcast and also my retro PC game for the week , see you there if your interested! But, “In the meantime and in-between time.” enjoy this old school battle royal and I will be back with another ” ring a ding dong dandy ” next week!

Oh no! G has invaded again!! BOO!!! BOOOOOO-URNS!!!!!

This week I return to give PatMan a break and bring you some Stampede Classics… or something related to the Stampede Wrestling professional wrestling promotion from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This week brings a famous Hart brother and an innovator of Mixed Martial Arts to a head… and in of all places…

In 1998, Fully Loaded: In Your House took place on July 26th in Fresno, California. Most of it, at least. One match did not take place there, however. You rarely see this in the modern era of wrestling, as this match was taped “live” elsewhere…

A special part of the history of Calgary’s wrestling legacy is a well known basement. “The Dungeon,” of course, was the training grounds for Stu Hart’s school. Naturally, it’s fame would follow this room all the way the then WWF in the form of a match between Ken Shamrock and Owen Hart w/ Dan Severn as special guest referee. This might be the coolest basement match to ever air on a Pay Per View event? Yeah, I think so.

Welcome to another episode of PatMan Picks Stampede Wrestling classics. This week I am going back in time to a point further than I remember actually watching Stampede Wrestling on television as a kid. I don’t know if my fellow Calgary man G was watching the promotion as far back as what is seen in this classic video, but I don’t personally remember actually seeing a lot of Jake Roberts or Big Daddy Ritter competing in Stampede, so its a nice treat to watch them now. As we all know, both men would become very famous wrestlers in the WWF and in other promotions around the world. However, in this video we can clearly see that both men are still in the early stages of their careers, still learning how to “evolve” into the the big super stars that they would eventually become. Worth noting this time around is that Jake Roberts was the current Stampede North American Heavyweight champion while Daddy Ritter ( JYD for most of you) was the former North American champion making this a pretty big match in Stampede for the time. But there was something else on the line in this match that maked it even more special and more interesting for classic wrestling fans. The winner of the match would go on to face the legendary Harley Race, for the world championship title on a future card in a Stampede Wrestling event. It truly was a wonderful time in wrestlings past where world champions form the big organizations would sometimes come to places like Stampede and wrestle in special matches against local territorial champions. See you all on the next PatMan Picks, and why not check out Wonderpod Videogame podcast epsidoe 71 & Patman picks PC classics over at wonderpodonline.com!

Its time once again for another old school classic Stampede Wrestling moment from the PatMan. This time around I am including one of Stampede Wrestlings most talented wrestlers who, like many others, went on to enjoy great Success in the WCW ,WWE and Japan. Unfortunately, his story did not end with success but rather with horror and shocking acts of brutal crime that I need not remind any of you about. Yes, of course, I am referring to Chris Benoit. Lets look away from his horrific end to life and temporarily concentrate on him at a much younger age where his wrestling was all that mattered. Chris Benoits in ring abilities were very impressive right from the get go, and his obsession with emulating his icon The Dynamite Kid are visible in many of his earlier matches. I have for you today what could very well be Chris Benoits first chance at the taste of a championship belt. His opponent was a very talented grappler by the name of The Great Gama, the mid heavyweight champion and a much more experienced wrestler than young Chris was at the time. Worth noting in the video is the appearance of Davey Boy Smiths “evil cousin” Jonny Smith who is up to his usual heel antics. Also worth noting later in the video is an in ring interview where another young wrestler destined for success, Flying Brian Pillman , can be quickly seen several times to the left of Chris Benoit. Our very own Audio Master G ,who was actually body slammed by Chris Benoit onto a couch in his childhood back in Calgary may be interested in this classic match as he is the only person I know who took some bumps form him. Maybe he could have given the Great Gama a few tips? If you don’t know that G had encounters with Chris Benoit & Bad News Brown while I took an accidental hit from The British Bulldog & encountered an angry Bret Hart at Safeway, you clearly must download our Stampede Wrestling podcast, found at both Wonderpodonline.com and right here at BoredWrestlingFan.com ! You can check out my Classic PC Game Picks & Wonderpod video game podcast episode 70 over at Wonderpodonline.com also, if your interested! See you all next time.

One of my favorite battle royals in Pro Wrestling history must be the classic at WM4. And as mentioned in our Stampede Wrestling podcast, as kids growing up in Calgary that match was extra special for the likes of G and myself. There were several Stampede Wrestling alumni in that big match including Junk Yard Dog, Danny Davis and Jim“The Anvil” Neidhart. The final two competitors in this famous WWF battle royal ended up being Bret Hart & Bad News Brown. The chemistry they displayed in the ring as they teamed up to eliminate their other opponents was no fluke, however. They had, of course, worked together many times before in the past back in the days of Stamped Wrestling. I can recall many great matches between the two back in the day, including ladder matches and no disqualification matches which aired on TV and entertained fans in countries all over the world well before both men ended up in the WWF. I bring you today one such classic match between Bret Hart and Bad News Allen in Stampedes famous past. Its for the North American heavyweight title, held by a young Bret Hart facing his challenger, one mean looking Bad News Allen. Worth noting is, as always, the heels in Stampede wrestling getting away with all sorts of mischief, which also as always, is driving the crowd absolutely nuts. Also worth noting are the post interviews by both Bret with his brother Bruce and the hilarious ending of Bad News Allen’s post interview with his entourage of heels as they insult Ed’s tie? Its both interesting and entertaining to watch these future wrestling superstars in their younger years. Bret truly is in the learning stages of how to become the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. And what better place to hone his skills than right in his home city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. See you all next time for another edition of PatMan Picks ,Stamped Wrestling classics! Oh and for those who dont know who I am, I am on Wonderpod Videogame podcast over at www.wonderpodonline.com and have other PatMan picks and Patman plays articles over there, if you want to check them out!
